Well, we did it.
We are officially Ragnarians.
The Wasatch Back Ragnar started 9 years ago and it goes right past my parents house, so all through high school and every year since then as we watch them go past, I think, man, I wish I was hardcore enough to do that. I really never thought I would. I've never ever been a runner. I've actually despised running most of my life. Then I met Jake, an avid runner. And now I'm addicted. We have been wanting to do the Ragnar for a few years now. We were all signed up and paid for the Las Vegas Ragnar 2 years ago, but then due to it falling right during Jake's midterms we had to drop out. Then last year I was pregnant, so this year when the opportunity presented itself, we could not pass it up. And boy was hard, and worth it!

The Wasatch Back Ragnar is a relay series that goes from Logan to Park City. You have either a team of 12 or a team of 6 (known as Ultra teams..yeah right, never going to happen). 6 people in each van, and each person runs 3 legs of the relay totaling 197 miles. My legs were a total of 15 miles, Jake's a total 18. We our team was called "Slow Children at Play". We were Van 1 which consisted of 3 of my cousins, us, and my little sister.
We started off Thursday night, Tif picking up the van, going grocery shopping, and heading to Logan to spend the night. Our start time was originally 10:00 am, but we requested to have it changed to an earlier time, so we ended up with 7:45 am. It was perfect. We just had to be there by 6:30. We got up got changed into our running gear for Leg 1, decorated the van, got our packet, and got Tif to the starting line to begin Leg 1.
And so it begins. Have you ever seen someone so excited to run 20 miles before?
Not me.
Tif's first leg was about 8 miles so we went back to the van, finished decorating it, and then headed out to cheer her on and eventually wait for her at the exchange.
Exchange #1, Shane waiting for the handoff from Tif.
Part of team Slow Children at Play. Van 2 came to the starting line and the first exchange to help cheer us on.
Once Shane was off we parted with Van 2 until exchange 6, then we headed our to go cheer for him.
Dorie waiting for the handoff from Shane, and Shane after his first leg, about 8 miles.
Shayli was runner 4, which meant she got to run up most of Avon Pass. I ran up the first part of it, she finished it off with about 7 miles, all uphill. It was so dusty. We felt pretty bad for her. But she did it!
After a while we had to stop writing down kills because we had too many...I was surprised. Overall our van ended with 415. I was pretty darn proud of my 46.
Kill=passing another runner

And he is off. I tell you we had quite a time trying to get pictures of this kid. He was too fast! This leg he averaged about an 8 minute mile, his second leg (which was uphill, up East Canyon) he averaged about an 8:30 minute mile, and his last leg, which granted was pretty flat, but still he ran a 7 minute mile. I was a proud wife.
My shoes...haha. Random picture but I love them.
I'm not entirely sure where the picture of the Honey Buckets came from...I didn't take it. But I figured they were memorable enough to include in the blog. haha

On this particular leg, we literally couldn't catch up to him. There was traffic getting out of Avon Pass and he just ran too fast. We pulled into the parking lot, ran to the exchange, and got there right as he was running up. Therefore, not very good pictures of him.
After Jake finished it was Van 2's turn. We finished just up in Eden, and Leg 2 started just up at Snowbasin not far from my aunt's house. So being the awesome aunt that she is she made us a yummy lunch of Spaghetti, French Bread, Lemonade, and Ice Cream. We also used the opportunity to take some quick naps and recharge.
The ice cream cones provided a perfect picture opportunity to go with our
"Fat kids are harder to kidnap" shirts.
After some food and a nap we headed back up to Snowbasin to start Leg 2.
Shane handing off to Dorie in Mountain Green.
At the high school right after my 2nd leg. Just starting to get dark.
The 2nd leg for Van 1 goes right past my Mom and Dad's house, where Emery was staying. And Jake's leg started at their church just down the street. So we stopped at their house and picked up Emery and we all walked down to the Church. It was so good to see her. I missed her so much! I was crying when I had to leave her again :( I'm a baby, haha

After Jake ran up East Canyon (yuck) it was about 11:15 PM. We hopped in the Van and drove to where our exchange with Van 2 would be the next morning. We got there about 1 AM, spread out our sleeping bags on the lawn, and tried to get a few hours of sleep. Which is hard to do when you have generators going all around you, teams coming and going, and cheering, and it is really cold in the mountains at night....Lucky me I had Jake's Mummy Bag so I slept like a rock. At 5 AM we got a text that they were coming up on the exchange. We jumped up, tossed everything back in the van, saw Tif off, and began Leg 3. We were exhausted and sore. Our enthusiam in cheering wore off a little with each leg...haha
My last leg was around Jordanelle and then dropped into Midway. It was really pretty.
I was finally able to get some pictures of Jake running on his third leg, but only because I just walked a little ways down from the exchange and took them. I knew he was too fast for us to be able to get ahead, take pictures, get back in the van, and make it to the exchange before him.
After we finished our third leg it was just up to Van 2 to finish and us to wait at the finish line. We were so tired, and it was so hot, it got kind of miserable...As you can see Shane couldn't stay awake. That became prime opportunity for Jake and Tif to tease...
Finally Van 2 arrived, their last runner was on the last leg. We took some pictures and headed to the finish line to wait for her!
When your runner comes, they call your team number and everyone goes out to run across the finish line together.
YAY! We did it!
We were finally reunited with Em.
I am so glad that we got this experience and boy did we have a lot of fun. We made a lot of memories. Good family bonding time. And overall we ended up doing pretty well. We "ran in our very special way". (only fellow van oners would understand that)
Overall we took 384th out of 1092 teams. In the top 35%!
In the mixed category we were 261st out of 800 teams
And in the Coed category we were 219th out of 868 teams.
Finished in 32 hours, 19 minutes, and 19.6 seconds.
Way to go Team Slow Children at Play!
Can't wait until next time!
